To chop... or not to chop

I have been not as productive as I would like in the past while, quick comic to hopefully get out of that. Still playing around with style. I like the style of my last comic but I need to find a more efficient way of doing it.

I've been debating whether or not to cut my hair off again, I'm lazy and my curly hair looks bad short and unstyled, but then again I spend quite a while just brushing it out.

There are such things as dumb questions

True story, happened to a friend of a friend of mine, me.
Unfortunately.
The sad thing is this is a very condensed version of this conversation. I think it lasted for about 5 minutes and she just wouldn't accept that she could go in any direction and find a ride.

Anniversary Commission

I was commissioned to draw this in the style of the drawings in my last post, which is very cool because I was really just playing around. I enjoyed doing this a lot, I had some really good reference photos.

Moving Forward

I've been only working weekends this month and in my spare time I've been looking at other artists work, caricaturists specifically, and it's really been inspiring me to try new things. In the theme park I get easily caught up in just being a crowd pleaser, people want to be cute, fine, you're cute, next. It's easy, and well, when there is a crowd there is quite a bit of pressure. These people have been waiting a long time and I don't want to disappoint them. We've been so short handed some nights that I've had to work on my own on a weekend night. One day specifically I had about an hour and a half wait, which is flattering, don't get me wrong, but imagine waiting that long to only be disappointed? Everyone in that line up was awesome thankfully. Nights like that really get me into a rut and I'm not really happy with what I produce since they happen quite often.

Something that really stuck with me from taafi was when Marlo had said that she tries to never draw the same thing twice, and it really got me thinking about how I go about a drawing. It was a lecture on stylistic drawing, that was basically broken down to not relying on "style".

I recently bought Nate Kapnicky's book, Beasted, and he has a lot of progress sketches along with the final piece. I don't plan out my drawings at the park, and I find they're starting to really suffer because of it, so I want to start doing some on my own so I have a better library of shapes that I can use on the fly. Looking at a lot of those cool artists, they only have a basic shape, and then go nuts with the details.

I want to create simple cartoons, that are exaggerated but still have likeness (hey, a caricature!)
Only, I don't have the guts to do it usually.
But if I build up the kind of confidence I have with my park sketches, I think things will change and I will have a better time drawing for a live audience.

Anyway, I stole some faces of friends, hope ya'll don't mind.

Adam and Elena

JJ and Immalyn (Immalyn! Where is your blahg?!)

Gal and Rigg

x2

I wanted to focus on couples for now since couples are majority of my customers. I really like how some artist fit two people on a page and almost make their shapes so they fit together. Of course, that takes planning and really looking at your couple. These aren't as successful in that respect as I would like them to be, but baby steps. I usually draw two people side by side, barely fitting them on the page. I like where I was going with the third one, or Gal and Rigg, but his cheek is making too much of a tangent with her hair for me to ignore. So I gave it another shot and it ended up being composed more like one of my park sketches. I like my first attempt at those two better. It's more appealing overall.

I've drawn Adam and Elena loads of times so I kind of knew where I wanted to go with their faces, only they didn't flow together as much as I had hoped.

I will probably take another crack at these guys.

Anyway, large amount of writing is large, I enjoy reading how other people go about their work, so I'm going to keep doing this to bring my thoughts together and actually keep this updated rather then having nothing to show for months. Maybe I'll entertain someone, I'm probably just speaking to air. Whatever :)

Dorky

The last of these was drawn about 3 weeks ago. Full time season is done so now I have some time to do work other then caricature :)

This guy was funny. I drew him as a demo, which he bought, and came back later on with his girlfriend to get another. I don't have a picture of it but he wanted this one similar to the other, I had him chewin  his cheek and his hickey shining bright.

My coworker Nyssa, she is adorkable.

This family was great to draw, they posed for me and got a lot of stares from passers by. The second one is rocking Jenna Marbles' "face"

Original non repetitive title here

More Caricatures. I started signing my name differently, kind of tired having to explain what my previous signature meant and it turned into a scribble pretty fast when I had people waiting. So keep it simple, its my name. These first three drawings were done about 2-3 weeks ago, the last few were in the last few days.

I like drawings groups a lot, I think I got the girls likeness pretty well, but in attempt to fit him on the page, the dad lost a bit. They were a pretty fun group to do though.

I did a yolo swag drawing a few days before this, and here is my first duckface drawing. She was well aware of how she was posing and said its a thing between her friends. I think this was a gift to her mom.

Babies. I found babies the most difficult to draw, now that I have a bit of a process I don't sweat so much now when I get a baby drawing. I actually like dong them a lot now.

Alien gums

My friend Kevin Cato has the craziest set of gums. I draw him often since he's got such a distinct set of features.

Also, he always asks me for food.

Toothbrush Molester

So after school I moved into a fairly disgusting apartment, it's only for the summer, so I can deal. I've been here 3 months and the roaches have lessened, I kill a big sucker daily as opposed to 10 every time I walk into the kitchen, so its been an improvement. We had the place sprayed last week and honestly I think it made things worse. I am not a squeamish person, I see bug, I kill it and move on. I draw the line at certain things. Ever since I moved I've had this fear of a roach just chilling on my toothbrush. I kept my toothbrush in my room since there have been significantly less roach sightings. I forget to bring it back sometimes, and it's been less and less lately. I guess I kind of convinced myself, that "aw, what are the chances" and made a stupid comic about my fear of finding a roach on my toothbrush.

This is unfinished, because last night this crap came true. I pulled my toothbrush out of it's cup and out flew a roach onto my hand. I killed the sucker this morning, but this was my face last night.

I will not take a chance again, toothbrush you will be safe in my room. I was going to redraw this comic and actually make it look nice with like, straight lines and crap, but it's just not funny to me anymore D: Though I do like the expressions.

Never trust roaches.

Curucatures

It was a demo, I think, she had a funny shaped face.

I am a petty person, I admit this. These two girls came up to me and said "If we don't like it, do we HAVE to buy it?" Then they proceeded to tell me that they both wanted dimples and "you know how a caricature is supposed to emphasize things, well can you emphasize these things" and listed a few features they wanted me to pretty-fy. When people do this I'm just kinda like "you know, the point of these is to look like you eh"

So I drew it, I kind of had some fun with it, and they ended up loving it. And well, I liked it better then most so it worked out both ways haha.

This was drawn last week.... I think, my days are mashing together.
These guys were cool, I liked the turnout of her moreso, could have done better with him. I'm really trying to give girls a more unique drawing with more likeness rather then just pretty facing them and basically just redrawing the same drawing. It is difficult.

Start of the 2012 Season

Thought I should finally get to posting these, all these drawingsa are about a month old. I haven't really been taking pictures this year, but I'll try harder. I find it hard drawing women since most are so sensitive to anything. So unfortunately I'm getting into a cute style I can't seem to get out of, I'm trying, its hard

As for the one below, this was a demo he came back later on and bought, I think it's one of my favourite drawings this year. I've been doing a lot of demos during slow time, I got to learn to get the type of people that actually buy them, I usually try for kids and teens since they're easy to sit down haha. I use demos to try new things. This one was done a few days ago.
The other day I had 3 separate people come up to me and said I drew them this year because I was bored haha. I should stop using that excuse I guess :P

Last Life Drawings of my School Career

I am officially a grad. Yay. Now to find a real job. I like these two from my final portfolio, I like the scene ideas, gives them a  bit of life, and colours too, I can't find my box of colours so I just used a few randoms I bought recently

Anime North 2012

So I lucked out and got a table again this year. Unfortunately we were in a place that didn't get a lot of traffic so I got pretty bored at some points. The One Piece drawings were product of that, but they helped to get a few commissioners later on. This year I bought some keychains and did custom drawn keychains, I liked the idea, but I didn't have it displayed well enough to generate much interest, same with my keychains in general. Oh well, live and learn, I just hope My little Pony and Game of Thrones don't go out of style for next year :)

I got a few return customers this year, This one was for Sophie! This wasn't the finished one, I shaded it with markers, it was awesome that people remembered me!

Simca from Air Gear, the comissioner wanted something sexy ;) I like the turn out of this one a lot.
